Two Hip Family-Friendly Shows in NYC Put a New Spin on Holiday Classics

CHarlie Brown Christmas

(DGIwire) — As the holidays are upon us, there’s nothing quite like live theater to enjoy as a family activity, especially in New York City, the home for magical holiday performances. Families looking for alternatives to Radio City, while still embracing tradition, are turning to these two enchanting, reimagined productions that are sure to put even the biggest Scrooges in the holiday spirit.

The classic cartoon A Charlie Brown Christmas celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, so it’s a perfect time to check out the “live” version. In Brooklyn for its eighth year in a row, an ensemble recreates the cartoon, word-for-word and gesture-for-gesture, along with a live jazz trio. Parents who have grown up with this classic and know the words themselves will appreciate seeing Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the Peanuts gang come alive in a whole new way. This production is great for kids of all ages, especially the little ones, as it is only about 30 minutes in length (same as the cartoon) and in an intimate venue where every seat is close to the action.

All performances will be held at Redwood Studios (55 9th St.) in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Show times for 2015 are: December 11 at 8 PM; December 18 at 7 PM; December 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 1 PM, 4 PM and 7 PM. Tickets are selling out quickly and can be purchased here: Also, the company’s GoFundMe page is offering “Meet & Greets” with the characters and other perks for donations to support the new venue after the closing of the Brooklyn Lyceum:

Another family favorite, A Christmas Carol, produced by MOD Theatre Company, will begin performances this year at The Curlman Theater on 42nd St. on Theatre Row in Manhattan.

Seven performers bring 57 classic characters to life (or death) in this imaginative production. With clever action and creative staging, this ghostly retelling delivers a fresh look at this beloved traditional tale.

MOD Theatre Company is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the classics from page to stage with artistic vision and prowess. A Christmas Carol leads MOD’s flagship season, which will be followed by adaptations of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Show times for 2015 are: December 16 and 23 at 2 PM and 8 PM; December 17-18 at 8 PM; December 19 at 2 PM and 8 PM; December 20 at 3 PM; December 21-22 at 7:00 PM. Tickets for MOD Theatre’s A Christmas Carol can be purchased here:
